Absolutely! Necrozoology is so important! If I don't understand what I'm summoning, the system the magic is braced on is going to be weaker, and the summon will be less viable. Taking care of a skeleton can be as much work as taking care of a live animal!

[personal profile] howintreeguing 2017-06-11 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh...! So, when you want to... summon something, how do you... begin?
bowtiedbones: (27)

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2017-06-13 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
The first thing is to prepare the skeleton. With a lot of my work, that means I have to get multiple skeletons together, and hope they're all similar in age or size. I don't work with incomplete assemblies.

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2017-06-13 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of subfossils are incomplete, and newer skeletons might be damaged too. A complete skeleton is more stable and easier to work with.

[personal profile] howintreeguing 2017-06-14 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I see. And... it doesn't matter if... the bones are from different animals, as long as... they're similar enough specimens?
bowtiedbones: (22)

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2017-06-14 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
Right, though of course using a single-source specimen gets the best results.
howintreeguing: (013)

[personal profile] howintreeguing 2017-06-14 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
What's the next step...?
bowtiedbones: (27)

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2017-06-14 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Research! Ideally, I want to learn a lot about what I can expect from the animal's behavior and movements, even diet.
howintreeguing: (015)

[personal profile] howintreeguing 2017-06-14 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, skeletons... can eat?
bowtiedbones: (63)

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2017-06-14 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
They like to play with food, like some will chew on bones or try to catch fish even though they can't eat.
howintreeguing: (002)

[personal profile] howintreeguing 2017-06-14 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Oh... so, do they... remember being alive?
bowtiedbones: (22)

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2017-06-14 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
Not fully. I don't work with specific souls, so they don't have their own memories of being alive, but they have enough knowledge to act how a live animal would. Their instincts and habits are in place.
howintreeguing: (015)

[personal profile] howintreeguing 2017-06-14 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
That's interesting! So you... use the skeletons and... subfossils, to learn about... the species at large...?
bowtiedbones: (51)

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2017-06-14 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah! These are animals that have died hundreds of years ago, but we can still observe them.
howintreeguing: (007)

[personal profile] howintreeguing 2017-06-14 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ohhhh.

[squirms slightly. bounces a single small bounce.]

That seems... cool.
bowtiedbones: (32)

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2017-06-14 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
It's soooo cool.

Want to see an example?
bowtiedbones: (27)

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2017-06-14 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
That tupperware with the dragon skeleton, the one with the curved beak? That one died at least 700 years ago.

Open it!
howintreeguing: (015)

[personal profile] howintreeguing 2017-06-14 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
Okay—!

[opening it carefully]
bowtiedbones: (28)

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2017-06-14 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
[scuffs her toe over the chalk line around her bed, smearing it, then claps her hands cheerfully]

Lori, wake up! Someone wants to meet you.

[on cue, the little skeleton pops its head up, shaking off cotton balls]
bowtiedbones: (9)

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2017-06-15 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That's is Lori. Her bones are over 700 years old.

[Lori bobs her head curiously, recognizing her name, then climbs out to perch on the edge of the tupperware and stretch her bony wings]
bowtiedbones: (51)

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2017-06-17 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
[the dragon bobs her head even more excitedly. yes! i am lori! that is me!]

Hold still and she might climb up your arm. She likes to sit on shoulders.
