Day 10

[It's awfully warm today. There are cool drinks in bowls of ice, and shady umbrellas anywhere that there's likely to be a lot of sun. It's a little cooler inside, or in the caves and grottos near the ocean, but even the woodland paths are muggy and unpleasant. Swimming might be the thing to do, today.]

[The poll board has switched over to proclaim:]

HANA & RUSSI ARE: NOT A MATCH

Nicon pipes up to say: "Just a reminder to everyone, we're pretty much halfway through! Day 20 will be the last day, if you don't get everyone matched before then. I think you're starting to narrow things down, but . . ."

[ the poll ]

[Your goal today is to pair off with someone you think might be your own soulbonded. Remember, this needs to be consensual, and it must be pairs.]

[Functionally, the poll below has only members of the white team. Black team members are responsible for placing a vote on their partner only when you and your partner have mutually decided. You can do so AT ANY TIME—if you come to an agreement with a partner early on in the day, please do toss up a vote so it's clear to everyone that you're thinking about it! You can switch things around later, or move your vote to "I'm thinking about it…" if you're reconsidering. You can also handwave the discussion and pair up OOCly; the key part is that we don't end up with two people on one person, anyone without a pair, or an OOC misunderstanding that would make it a one-sided agreement.]

Of course, I'd never sell them for anything.

Not even if you were utterly destitute?

They're familiars. That's like asking "would you eat your cat if you were broke."

Well, they are bone...

I said anything, and I meant anything.

Making a joke about your familiars and briefly ignoring you'd never abandon them?

[switches to crossing her arms, starting to tap her foot rapidly]

You asked me what my treasures were, and then joked about if I would destroy them for myself. That's not a fun topic.

I'm a necromancer. My familiars are dead except for me maintaining them.

... ah. Then I'll apologize again. I like my morbid humor, and didn't realize I was stepping over a line with it. Now I know better.

I'll make it clearer next time. Thank you.

[it would be an easy phrase to say sarcastically, but she seems to mean it earnestly. jun doesn't know her magic's rules or any of her relationship with her familiars. she has to allow for getting her toes stepped on.]

Well, thanks for answering my question in spite of the result.

[don't ask people if they'd eat their pets, jun!!!!]

I would be breaking 20 different rules if I sold them anyways, even if I would be rich after. I have a lot of special permissions to own their fossils.

That's fascinating, and sounds like a pretty difficult process.

I haven't made a familiar out of anything that I thought had significant research value, but you need to keep that potential in mind... A lot of the time though, it's just an ownership debate. You get it with people finding buried gold too. Does it belong to the landowner, the government, or the guy with the metal detector? We want that sorted out before I take something home.

That's a lot more complex than I would've given it credit for. I definitely imagine you might have trouble with customs work, too.

[starting to perk up again]

I had to import Lori, but she wasn't actually that hard to get. I think they were just glad I wasn't trying to get out a live flowerdrake. They're more concerned with the extant species being affected than what happens to a 700-year-old extinct one.

She's a small island species, so. That area took it hard when humans and rats arrived. There's a big effort to protect what they still have.
