From the sounds of it, it means rather than take something as a challenge to prove yourself and live up to it, you'd rather protect your pride instead.

It's not my pride I'd be protecting. I'm fine with "lick a shoe" or "say something embarrassing about yourself" but I'm not okay with "what's the worst thing that's ever happened" or "take your shirt off" because that's not fun for anyone. And you know most games end up going that way so.
