You know that you don't have to be alone with your burdens, right? Soul mate or not. Especially with the people here, I think.

I really am a coward, though. The thought of opening myself up to that kind of rejection is terrifying. I'd rather suffer my burdens alone.

To be frank: That's stupid. Things are not nearly so black and white, and as long as you're determined to put on a brave face and suffer in solitude I doubt that you'll be able to achieve what you need to. Besides, taking on a burden is not just your decision - it's two-way.

That being said - I'm not going to say there isn't a chance that you'd end up alone anyway, or rejected. But... having been alone myself, I can say that the best relationships are the ones you will always treasure, even if you're apart. They help you grow, and give you space to breathe. They give you hope.

You sound like you need more of it.
